Houses
and Families - RWS 2004
NOTE: All of the ANALYSIS schedules use the same numbering to the houses or blocks of housesw.
Ths bears no relation to the numbering of households in the TRANSCRIPTS of the origional census returns.
The names of occupants must be referred to when relationg the-s analysis to the transcripts.
It should not be assumed that the following
lists relate houses to tenants with absolute certainty.
Some places such as
A poverty of parochial records transforms
in the 1840s into comparative abundance.
The first parish rate list, tithe apportionment, and detailed census
returns begin in 1841. The
Tithe Apportionment was drawn up in order to fix a rent-charge on land in
place of the age old tithe of crops in kind, and has no direct connection
with housing. However,
On the basis that the village in 1831 contained 32 houses, one of which was the workhouse and another the coastguards, very little building could have taken place in the decade to 1841. The village only had one more house, and there is some evidence that one cottage had been destroyed by fire, [refer to Edmund Bushby and the School History] while the most likely new building was the final two cottages in the North Lane terrace, accounting for the one addition to the village total.
Very few houses were named in any of the
sources, until the end of the 19th century, but where they are the names are
placed in quotes.
It
may be noted that the Coastguard Cottages were referred to in the Tithe Apportionment
as the Preventive House, as if it were a single dwelling, whereas there is
no doubt it was a typical row of coastguard cottages, each pair having intercommunicating
lobbies.

Census Returns
Servants
are enumerated only where they are assumed to be serving the household in
which they live and not their own families, and not the servants living out.
Lodgers
are enumerated only where so named in the census returns.
Where houses are named these are in quotes. The workhouse had its own schedule. As may be seen in the full transcript
of the 1841 census, no houses were named, and many of them were out of order
with coastguards dispersed through the schedule. With no family relationships stated, it
is not possible to define lodgers, but there are a few instances where these
were probable.
Workhouse
schedules have not all been checked nor the numbers of inmates.

Rates
The parish rates lists seldom name houses,
but they provide valuations for them and list the owners and, in some years,
the tenants. It is notable that recently built houses
were rated higher than older properties of similar size.
